Circle the City: Christian Aid Sponsored Walk

City of London, Sunday 17 May, 2009

Everyone gets their cards signed at each church - here in Southwark Cathedral

St Magnus the Martyr was in the City of London on the north end of Old London Bridge (and it has a nice model of the old bridge.)

From Wren's St Magnus the Martyr we walked to his St Mary-at-Hill Eastcheap

The interior is virtually empty after a major fire in 1988, but this perhaps makes Wren's genius clearer to see

Next was All Hallows by the Tower - a mixture of styles from Saxon to 20th century (after extensive damage in the blitz)

It's perhaps best known for Philip “Tubby” Clayton, founder of Toc H,who was Vicar for many years.

The Croke Altar at left contains the Toc H lamp, and the four panels of the Tate altar piece by a Flemish artist around 1500

Linda comes out of the next church, St Olave in Hart St, one of the few medieval churches to survive the Great Fire of 1666

The church is close to Trinity House, which may explain the light ship, and that could be St Olave lurking in the corner

The memorial to Jacobus Deane shows three remarkably similar wives (serial rather than polygamous - two hold skulls, the children also lie on skulls.

And five skulls also adorn the gate into the churchyade in Seething Lane
