Students Protest Fees & Cuts

Malet St to Whitehall, London. Wed 24 Nov

Students try to break through police lines and out of the kettle

The officer in the helmet appeared to completely lose his temper and strike out indiscriminately

A few pushed their way through, but most of the students were just there watching rather than trying to get through

A few officers seemed to lose it here and one or two seemed really to enjoy lashing out

After around ten minutes reinforcements arrived and it was obvious the students would make no headway

Police were letting a few people - mainly young girls - out of the kettle

Other people were trying to get in to join the demonstration but were refused entry

The kettle was pretty full

Outside the kettle, riot police were charging more demonstrators and pushing them backaway from the protest

I was threatened with a baton when I was photographing over the wall.

It was time for me to leave the area.
Police held some of the demonstrators in the kettle for another five hours before allowing them to leave,
clearly using it as a way to impose a short period of detention as a punishment to the protesters, most of
who had been peacefully asserting their democratic right to protest.
