Devon/Dorset HolidayCannington Viaduct, 13 Jul 2014 |

![]() The line here was on an embankment ![]() ![]() With a bridge over a farm track ![]() The road went through between the farm buildings ![]() ![]() ![]() and soon we could see the viaduct. There is a footpath marked direct to it, but it seemed to be overgrown and part underwater ![]() So we continued along the road, taking a short cut across by a pond where the road goes on a loop ![]() Soon we got a better view of the Cannington Viaduct ![]() Quite an impressive structure |

![]() So we took far too many pictures of it ![]() The railway was a 'Light Railway' and got the go-ahead in 1896, but the viaduct was only finished in 1903 ![]() It was one of the first and highest to be built with mass concrete with pre-cast concrete voussoirs ![]() and one arch had to be reinforced after some slippage happened during the building ![]() with a brick arch ring. ![]() A stream runs under the viaduct close to this arch ![]() The viaduct is a little over 600 ft long and the arches are 50 ft wide and 92 ft high. ![]() As we were leaving, a white horse appeared underneath it - so more pictures... ![]() |
