The last collier brought
its load of coal to Wandworth in April 1970, and gas production there ended
in May, but the gas holder remained in use. After the UK conversion to natural
gas was completed in 1976, these structures became redundant, as gas could
be stored in a fraction of the space in liquid form. Though I'm no expert
(though I know people who are) there seems to be nothing particularly deserving
of retention about this fairly recent structure, but last time I looked
it was still there. Perhaps the site is so toxic the cost of rehabilitation
is extreme.
The road layout has changed slightly around here with the opening of Swandon
Way, and given the amount of of traffic this now carries, playing a game
here would now be suicidal. But I don't think this was a goal marked or
used by kids, but I think probably for a film or photo-shoot. We never felt
any need to mark the goals we made with the word 'GOAL' and the lettering
is also suspiciously clear.
