This part of Manchester Road was fairly bleak and empty in 1982, with tall walls and locked gates hiding now derelict wharves and works. There were no riverside paths and very little legal access to the river around here.
 
At left you can see the tower block of the Samuda Estate, and a board states 'Exit Only' while the shadow of a tree resembles some frightening huge insect spreading over the pavement and gate.
