The Thames Metal Company
operated a scrap yard here from 1963 to 1987. The site was taken over by
Day Aggregates in 1993 and later was operated by Aggregate Industries, since
2005 part of the Swiss-based Holcim Group which in 2015 merged with Lafarge
to become the largest construction material supplier in the world. The Angerstein
Wharf site is used for sea-dredged aggregates and still has a railway branch
line.
