september we get back down to work, though there are still some fun events
like the Brick Lane festival in Spitalfields on 8 Sept.

the following saturday was Thames Day, with various events around the river.
Nothing seemed to be very exciting, though i did find a mermaid.
the countryside alliance came to town on 22 sept. it was a very large but
rather dull event. there were a few brave anti-hunt demonstrators, and a
balloon from the RSPCA which got attacked a few times - the countryside
is not apparently in favour of free speech.

when i got fed up with too many people looking exactly the same filing past i went to tower bridge, which was having a day as a beach (like 'Paris Plage', but that lasted rather longer) and took a few snaps of Ken etc.
the following weekend saw another vast anti-war demo. I photographed the march leaders assembling at Embankment at 12.30 and kept with them to Trafalgar Square, then stopped to take some of the others. It was too crowded to work properly much of the time. Later I went to Hyde Park Corner to take pictures of people arriving, then caught the tail end of the march in Piccadilly around 5pm.
its always difficult to assess the size of marches like this, but I'd guess
it as almost as big as the countryside march. they tried to make a accurate
count which was a good idea as the police estimate would doubtless have
been much smaller.
