Buttes Chaumont and Ronis's Belleville Traversée

Paris, Monday 17 Nov, 2008

Les Jardins d'Éole in the 18e, next to the rue d'Aubervilliers -the buildings are on the west edge of the 19e.

At the left the lines out of the Gare de l'Est, which despite the huge and imposing station seem to carry very few trains

Left:  Blues du Nord, a well-known music venue near Pl Stalingrad in the rue Caillié, named after René Caillié (1799-1838), the first European explorer to make it to Timbuctoo and back in 1828 ( Major Gordon Laing got there a couple of years earlier, but was murdered as he left. Caillié pricked the bubble of the city with a fabulous past, by the time of his visit it was a small and unimportant village.) Soon this street too will be replaced by anonymous appartments and offices, its past only a fable. Right: rue du Département

Rue de Tanger, 19e

Rotonde de la Villette
