Devon/Dorset Holiday

Seatown and Loughwood Meeting House, 14 Jul 2014

A stream runs under the shingle to the sea here

and large boulders remind us that the cliffs are unstable

We walked up the road out of Seatown

And were soon high enough to see the sea again

We skirted the edge of the large forest at the top of the picture, then came down and along the lane

we walked through a farm

And could see the clouds and rain approaching

so made our way as directly as possible back to the National Trust shop for tea and the car for the journey back

Tuesday morning we went to church - Loughwood Meeting House, one of the oldest Baptist Chapels, now National Trust

but still used for services a couple of times a year. First recorded in 1653 it was built to be inconspicuous at a time

when non-conformists were persecuted - fined and imprisoned. People came from some distance to worship here

Unusally one of the former ministers is burined in the church

The view from the pulpit

and from the back of the church. The small organ is more recent, and there is a musicians gallery at the rear of the hall.

The chapel is built into the hillside, with a stable beside it. Wild strawberries were fruiting in the cemetery..
