This corner of Emmett St is the location of a much better photograph in one of the books on my shelves at a time when it was a thriving newsagent and corner shop, covered with advertisements for tobacco, Cherry Blossom Boot Polish, Lyons Tea and Tizer, and offering home made lemonade and Ices. It was one of the 'Charmes De Londres' in what is certainly one of the most charming of books ever issued about Lodnon, with poetry by Jacques Prevert (and a number of quotations from sources including WIlliam Blake and Lewis Carroll), with a drawing by Picasso and his 5-year old son) facing black and white photographs by Izis (D'Izis-Bidermanas), This shop, on page 117 is 'Casse-croute. Emmett St, Limehouse, E.14.' after the three workmen taking a break on the benches in front of the shop.

Taken 30 years before my picture, it is a vivid reminder not just of the changes in this area, but also of a puritanism that has robbed our streets of much of their colour.

The book was published with superb printing by La Guilde du Livre in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1952, printed with an edition of 10,300 numbered copies (Mine is 4871), using photogravure on wood-pulp free paper. Photogravure is arguably the best of the mechanical printing processes for black and white photography, and has been used to produce fine-art photography portfolios and prints for sale.
