There were two such welcome signs, on both roads leading into the Isle of Dogs, one on Preston's Road and this one on Westferry Rd which I rather confusingly photographed on the same day.

Starting with the simple 'WELCOME TO THE ISLE OF DOGS', it was a message that lent itself to amendment and addition, the 'YOUR'E' at the start and, on the wall at the right 'IT'S THE SHIT'S', almost certainly written by one of the shits who lived there, though perhaps he had trained as a greengrocer rather than really claiming ownership as the shit.

Clearly this part of the island still had a working gravel wharf. I think it will have been roughly where the road had a slight bend shortly to the south of Emmett St, close to where the Limehouse entrance to the dock used to be. With high walls, narrow pavements and sometimes heavy traffic it the next few hundred yards were not at all welcoming.
