New work

Several years

running the Amateur Photographer ran portfolios of work from the club annual exhibition largely featuring work from the group and with comments such as 'the pictures ...suggest that the old concept of pictorialism, club style, is dead! But a new style appears to be sprouting in its place - a style that is much more graphic, much harder' and 'they display an awareness of style and subject-matter that is far removed from the traditional out-put of clubs.'

In 1982 we decided that there was enough work being produced in the group and that it was of sufficient interest for us to hold an independent exhibition. We presented a portfolio to a local public gallery and were offered a show. Despite some opposition (and a lot of scepticism) the club let us go ahead with a show of our work - possibly because we also included as guest exhibitors the current and prospective Presidents of the society together with one of its most distinguished members. To the surprise of most outside the group it was a very successful event, attracting favourable criticism from many quarters and more acclaim than the club's normal annual exhibitions.

Following this we began to organise a series of shows at other venues, far enough away for them not to impinge upon the club, and in 1984 a second Group 6 show at the local gallery. Again this was a great success, but attracted some criticism from within the club as the poster (though not the press release) failed to mention them.
